IT felt strange to Corrie to step out of the captain’s gig onto the hard amid all the clamor of the busy port of London. She could smell the smoke from countless coal fires.

‘How she heaves!’ said Corrie, astonished to find the solid ground rising and falling under her feet as if she were still aboard the Swift. She staggered to a waiting post-chaise, cursing under her breath. She was rolling from side to side as if she had imbibed too much wine. Months at sea had trained her eyes to compensate for the heaving of the deck. How long would it take her to readjust to walking about on solid unmoving dry land?

‘It takes an hour or two to get used to it,’ her father reminded her quietly. ‘Until then it is What shall we do with a drunken sailor?’

‘The Admiralty Building, Whitehall,’ said her father to the driver of the chaise, and moments later they were bouncing up and down on leaf springs and listening to the clatter of iron-shod wheels on cobbles.

They had entered another world.
